Ohio railing and handrail measurements

The Residential Code of Ohio and the City of Medina's deck guide set these numbers:

  • 36 inchesMinimum height of a required guard, measured from the deck surface.
  • 34 inches on stairsMinimum guard height on the open sides of stairs, measured from a line along the nosings.
  • Under 4 inchesNo opening in the guard may pass a 4-inch sphere, which sets baluster spacing.
  • 6-inch stair triangleThe triangle at the bottom of a stair guard can be up to 6 inches.
  • Handrail at 4 risersFour or more risers need a handrail on at least one side, 34 to 38 inches above the nosings.
  • Stair sizeRisers 8 1/4 inches or less and treads at least 9 inches; the City of Medina adds a 36-inch minimum stair width.

Ohio's code requires composite guards and handrails to carry an ASTM D7032 label with their maximum span, so post spacing follows the product.

How a Medina County deck project runs

  1. Send the request

The address, rough size and what you want the deck to do.

  2. Site visit

The deck builder measures, checks the house band where a ledger would attach, and notes slope and access.

  3. Design and quote

Layout, boards, railing and stairs, with a written price.

  4. Zoning, then the building permit

Township, village or city zoning comes first where it applies; the building permit follows.

  5. Call OHIO811, dig, inspect, build

The digger notifies OHIO811 at least two working days ahead, footing holes are inspected before concrete, and a final inspection closes the permit.

Who does what is agreed between you and the contractor. The City of Brunswick, for one, advises letting the contractor pull the permit, so the plans and inspections sit with the person doing the work.

What affects the cost of new deck railings?

Swapping balusters on solid posts costs far less than replacing posts that are loose at the rim joist. Beyond that, the price follows length, posts and the system you choose.

What affects the priceWhy it matters
Total lengthEvery foot of guard adds material and labor
Posts and stair runsMore posts and stair sections mean more connections
Railing systemWood, composite, aluminum or cable
Existing postsWhether they can stay or need replacing
LightingPost-cap or under-rail lights are an add-on

When does a deck need a railing in Ohio?

The Residential Code of Ohio requires a guard on any open side of a deck, porch, stair or landing that is more than 30 inches above the floor or grade below at any point within 36 inches of the edge. A low deck can skip them, but many owners add a railing anyway for looks or for kids.

Deck Railings questions

How far apart can deck balusters be in Ohio?
Ohio's code does not state a baluster spacing directly. It says a 4-inch sphere must not pass through any opening in a required guard, from the deck surface up to the guard height. In practice that keeps clear gaps under 4 inches. Composite and aluminum systems are built to that rule when installed as the maker specifies.
Can I replace just the railing on my deck?
Railing-only replacement works when the posts are solidly attached to the frame and the deck boards are in good shape. If posts move, or the deck itself is aging, it can be smarter to pair new railings with resurfacing or a rebuild. A contractor can check post attachment before quoting.
Are cable railings allowed on decks in Ohio?
Ohio's code sets the performance rules for guards, such as the 36-inch height and the 4-inch opening limit, rather than banning a material. Cable systems are designed to keep cables tight enough to pass that test, so tensioning and post spacing must follow the manufacturer. Ask the contractor how the system they quote meets the opening rule.
